What Is Cold Process Soap?

Cold process soap making is the traditional method of making soap by mixing oils and butters with a lye solution (sodium hydroxide and water). The chemical reaction that turns oils into soap is called saponification, and it happens naturally at room temperature over 24-48 hours, then continues to cure over several weeks.

The Basic Formula

Every cold process soap recipe needs three things:

  • Oils and butters — these provide the properties of your soap (cleansing, conditioning, hardness, lather)
  • NaOH (sodium hydroxide) — the lye that turns oils into soap
  • Water — dissolves the lye so it can react with the oils

The amount of NaOH you need depends on which oils you use. Each oil has a SAP value (saponification value) that tells you how much lye is required to fully saponify that oil. Apothecary Wizard calculates this automatically based on your chosen oils and superfat percentage.

Understanding Superfat

Superfatting means using slightly less lye than needed to saponify all your oils, leaving some free oils in the finished soap for extra conditioning. A 5% superfat is standard for most bar soaps — it provides good conditioning without making the bar too soft.

Safety First

Lye is caustic and requires respect. Always:

  • Wear safety goggles and gloves
  • Work in a well-ventilated area
  • Add lye to water, NEVER water to lye
  • Use stainless steel or heat-safe plastic containers (no aluminum — it reacts with lye)
  • Keep children and pets away

Your First Batch

Start with a simple 3-oil recipe like our Classic Gentle 3-Oil Bar in the community library. It uses olive, coconut, and palm oil — a balanced trio that is forgiving for beginners. Weigh everything carefully, follow the temperature guidelines, and be patient with the cure. Your first successful batch of soap is a deeply satisfying experience.

Use Apothecary Wizard's recipe builder to calculate your lye and water automatically, track your inventory, and schedule your batches so you always have soap ready when you need it.
