What Is IFRA?
The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) sets safety standards for the use of fragrance and essential oils in cosmetic products. Their guidelines specify the maximum safe percentage of each fragrance ingredient for different product categories (leave-on, rinse-off, etc.).
Why This Matters for Crafters
Essential oils are powerful plant extracts. Just because something is natural does not mean it is safe at any concentration. Many essential oils can cause skin irritation, sensitization, or even toxicity at high percentages. For example:
- Lavender — safe up to 5% in leave-on products
- Bergamot — limited to 3% (and can cause phototoxicity)
- Clove — limited to 0.5% due to strong sensitization risk
- Eucalyptus — limited to 2% and should be avoided around young children
How Apothecary Wizard Helps
Every fragrance and essential oil in the Apothecary Wizard ingredient database includes an IFRA safety usage limit percentage. When you build a recipe, the system automatically checks your fragrance percentage against the safety limit. If you exceed the safe level, you will see a red warning — before you ever pour a batch.
This feature can be muted in your account settings if you prefer to manage safety calculations externally, but we strongly recommend keeping it enabled, especially if you sell your products.
Product Categories Matter
IFRA limits vary by product type. A fragrance that is safe at 5% in a rinse-off soap may only be safe at 1% in a leave-on lotion. Always check the IFRA category for your specific product type. When in doubt, use less — you can always add more fragrance in the next batch.
Disclaimer
Apothecary Wizard provides IFRA data as a reference tool. It is your responsibility as a product maker to verify safety for your specific product and market. The IFRA standards are updated periodically, and some essential oils have additional restrictions beyond dermal limits (phototoxicity, pregnancy concerns, age restrictions). Always consult the full IFRA standard and your fragrance supplier's safety data sheet.
