What Happens During Cure?

Curing is not just waiting — it is an active process. During the cure period, three things happen simultaneously:

  1. Water evaporation — the soap loses moisture, making the bar harder and longer-lasting
  2. Continued saponification — residual lye continues reacting with oils, ensuring no free lye remains
  3. Crystalline restructuring — the soap's crystal structure stabilizes, improving lather and feel

How Long Should You Cure?

The traditional cure time for cold process soap is 4-6 weeks (28-42 days). Apothecary Wizard allows you to set custom cure days per recipe, and the scheduler uses this number to calculate when you need to start a new batch.

  • 4 weeks (28 days) — minimum for a usable bar. Still somewhat soft.
  • 6 weeks (42 days) — standard. Hard bar, good lather, stable.
  • 8 weeks (56 days) — premium. Exceptionally hard, mild, and long-lasting.

The Scheduler's Safety Buffer

Apothecary Wizard's scheduler adds a 7-day safety buffer to your cure time when calculating stock emergencies. If your current finished stock will run out before (cure days + 7 days), the system flags a "REPOUR IMMEDIATELY" alert. This buffer ensures you never run out of stock due to a slightly slow cure.

Non-Curing Products

Not everything needs to cure. Lip balms, body butters, linen sprays, and essential oil blends can go straight to finished inventory after production. Apothecary Wizard automatically skips the curing rack for these product types and moves them directly to ready-for-shelf status.

Cure Environment

Cure your soap in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Ideal conditions are 60-70% humidity and 65-75°F. Space bars at least 1/4 inch apart on a rack that allows air circulation on all sides. Never cure soap in a closed container — trapped moisture leads to soda ash and potential rancidity.

The Visual Curing Rack

Apothecary Wizard's visual curing rack shows your batches as bars on shelves with HTML5 progress bars. You can see at a glance which batches are ready to move to finished inventory and which still need more time. The progress bar fills based on days cured vs. required cure days, giving you an intuitive visual timeline.
